The largest land animal by height, I would say was the giraffe. If we are talking weight, I would say the elephant.

The largest by weight is the African elephant, which on average is somewhat heavier than the Indian elephant.

Tallest is the giraffe, though they obviously weigh much less.

If we look back through history, there are several sauropod dinosaurs competing for the title, including Argentinasaurus, Supersaurus, Paralititan, and Seismosaurus. Since these dinosaurs are known only from a few bones each, some extrapolation is needed to deduce approximate sizes.

the African elephant, Loxodonta africana, and Loxodonta cyclotis, are the two species of African elephant, the largest land animals living today. plenty of others were larger that are now extinct.

in existence we have the african elephant. but during the prehistoric times, and a lot of them were mammals, the biggest were the family of brontosaurus and also the mammoth.
