I don't have very many memories of High School. That's probably why I don't know what poignant means. I'm not telling what year I graduated in. It's my birthday tomorrow and I feel old enough. Lets just say the Beatles were the band of choice for our prom song.

I was a member of the flag team in the marching band. Before a big football game a girlfriend and I had "inhaled deeply" (this was back in the 70's). The flag team was to lead the band down the stadium. Everyone was trained to watch to your right so that the line would be straight and unified without someone getting to far ahead or behind. I was on the far left, outside edge and my girlfriend was right next to me on my right side. We started out fine, but somehow in our altered state, we forgot all rules and just watched each other which proved to be our big downfall. We ended up 20 yards ahead of everyone else!!!! I'm laughing like crazy as I type this as it's still funny when I think about it even after all these years. We probably would have marched all the way across the football field but thankfully one of us noticed our mistake. I remember us stopping and then running back to the rest of the group. Someone had taken a picture of the band and there we were 20 yards ahead. That picture is etched in my brain. We weren't kicked out of the flag team but I can remember the band director asking us what had happened. Funny the memory stops here as I don't remember what we told him. This happened during my senior year at San Diego High School in 1972.

I had a crush on a girl, that I'd never had the guts to talk to. The poignant memory would be the last day of school, when I got up the nerve to tell her I'd miss her (we were going to different colleges).
1977.
