it would be very uncomfortable sleeping on the top of a Jeep Cherokee in the cold and rain.

Open the car doors, then go over the top of the mattress and through the inside of the car with the rope. Tie the rope as tight as possible. Do that through the front and back seats, and then have one or two lines from the front of your car to the back. I have done this many times it always works. I have even tied two box springs and mattress all together this way. When your done you can shut the doors and drive away.

Put the mattress on first and then the box spring. If you are going very far, you will want to carefully wrap them in plastic in the event that it rains. The plastic needs to be very tightly taped to avoid whipping in the wind.
Fasten each corner using strong bungie cords to hook under the front and back bumper. Use ratchet straps criss-crossed over the mattress and box spring. After doing that, run some additional straps across them using the roof rack.

You want to start at one corner and tie off to the roof rack. You then go over the mattress to the opposite corner, underneath the rack and back to the corner you started at. You then run the same line under the rack to the next corner and do the same procedure as before.

Tie down straps are the safest and best way to ensure no movement. MAke sure they are the ratchet kind found at almost any auto parts store for tying down motorcycles and such.
