science fair project?

my teacher wants me to apply my science fair idea to everyday life. dose anyone know how the porosity and permiablitlity of objects (dirt,sand,graveletc..) relate to daily life.
PLZ HELP!!!

dirt and sand is used by water treatment facilities everyday to clean the water. it happens everyday and is a use of porosity and permeability, oil is formed from porosity in rocks.
