The Republican's Used the Gay Trump card of Gay Marriage to win the last presidential election. Now they are trying to use the Gay issue of Allowing Gay people to serve openly in the Military to as a political issue. Since Obama and Hilary are for allowing Gay people to serve openly, the Republicans are using that to Scare the Fundamentalist Religious Republicans to rally. The Republicans think that by Using the Gay Trump Card it will save the White House from the Democrats in 2008. I don't think it will work. But isn't it funny how predictable the Republican Leaders are and how naive somet Fundamentalist Christians are at not seeing through this Smoke Screen. I'm sure the General Pace's comments were well planned out with the Leaders of the Repulican Party Headed by George Bush. Do you agree that this attemp will fail this time?

Given that many 'conservative' generals have themselves said it's time to shelve DADT, I think it will fail.

Also, as someone who lives in a country where gays have been serving openly for years, I find it odd that some Americans can be so blind. Gay men and women are serving and dying for a country that seems to want to deny them the very freedom they are supposedly fighting for. Odd indeed.

Edit: I have to address something that I find more than just a bit odd. Both Pink and Java have made it clear they deeply hate gays and their opposition to gays serving, yet they cannot or will not bring themselves to address the one statement in my answer that is at the core of this whole discussion. Gays are fighting right now, they are dying right now and for what, a country populated by people who would not even give them the time of day let alone the dignity and respect as well as the freedom they so richly deserve and frankly, have earned. It's easy to be an armchair warrior but what cowardice it must be to denigrate the very people fighting a war you just benefit from.

Tracer - I usually agree with you but not this time. I think that abortion rights and Gores hot air about the environment and lack of charisma did a lot more to affect the vote than did the gay issue. I think that General Pace made a statement about his personal opinion on a slow news day and now his comments are being blown way out of proportion. Unfotunately when the news blows up comments like that, I think it tends to be very counterproductive both to the military and those who are fighting for equal rights across the board.

it's the classic us vs. them ploy. int he absence of the big bad russians from the cold war, politicians have to come up with a new boogey man to scare people to the voting booths. Republicans use gays, Democrats like to use class/social strife. Neither can use al Queda or bin Laden since everyone is against them, and that won't win you an election. It's far easier to be against something than for it.
will it work this time....i'm gonna say no. the last election was decided on abortion/gay marriage/iraq war. there is grumbling in the right-wing electorate (based on polling data from 2006) that big promises were made in '04 that never surfaced in policy or law. so i think a lot of the fundies are disenchanted. add to that the crop of republican presidential contenders and their "christian cred" and i don't think they will pull it off.

on the other hand, nov 2008 is far far away in the land of politics, who knows what will happen.

I'm not sure.
I can't believe that it is STILL an issue in 2007.
This is blatant discrimination.
WE (the younger Americans) MUST vote.
The Republican Right Wings vote and many Dem's and Liberals just voice their opinions.
As far as their predictability...you are correct.
Their Mantra should be...Gays, abortions, Mexicans...oh my.

Right - It was a sham when the Republicans signed the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and "The Defence Of Marriage Act" into law. What were they thinking?

Oh, wait, that was Bill Clinton who did that! Yea, with friends like democrats, you're realy making progress.

I hope it will fail this time, but I have little faith in humanity and even less in our fellow estadounidenses. (If you want my source for that word, please refer to some of my previous answers. I believe the last one was about South America changing its name.)

Did you change your pic? Or am I thinking of another Tracer? Didn't you used to be yellow?

I think it will. People are getting tired of hearing the same old nonsense. The last US election is evidence of that.

i certainly hope it will fail this time, i hope that people see that homosexuals should be able to serve in the military as proud homosexuals, not as the "closeted freaks" that they are portrayed to be... Go Dems!
