It's still legal to spank at some schools in Tennessee. The parents have to sign a consent form, though, at the beginning of the year and if the kid doesn't turn one in, the school can't spank them.
I find this rule to be hilarious because how many of those consent forms do you believe kids actually GIVE to their parents?

Yes from 1958-1971 I remember the wooden paddle w/ holes, thankfully I never had to feel it....

Yes, I was. I never was paddled for misbehaving. A teacher was playing around one day and hit me on the butt. He would probably lose his job and I could sue if that happened today.

I was, too, but I only got "the hand" and once got yanked by my ear out of a closet I had hidden in because I knew I was getting tattled on. Same teacher did both. I hated first grade and I hated Mrs. Fair. She was NOT! Fair that is.

Not me but my 1st grade teacher hit me with a ruler once and I slammed my chair on her big toe and broke it..and then my parents went to the school and got her suspended w/o pay for 6 weeks ... hahahaha

I was in school when they had a strap. It hung on the wall behind the Principal's desk. It was an ominous and forbidding occasion that brought you to his room, generally fraught with fear of reprisal. I had only one instance where the strap was brandished in my face. After that I stayed within the boundaries of good behaviour. *sigh* They taught us how to differentiate 'Principle from Principal' with this little memory trick, The Principal is your pal. None of my pals ever threatened me with a strap!
