Hi Jenny,,,
Just another of Life's little annoyances that $$$ will fix up just fine :)
If your existing battery is more than about 2 yrs old,,
It's worth replacing it with a Higher capacity battery.
You'll get extended run-time from both
a)being a fresh,new battery
b)being a larger capacity battery
And you can use your "old" battery as a spare.
The Drawback to using original-Style batteries is that You have to shut-down to SWAP the battery.
Run a few Hours,,shut down,,Swap Batts,,Reboot & Run a few more hours.
That may Not be a Problem for some folks---depending on their useage pattern,,type of applications/work.
If you Need or WANT to have uninterupted Battery power for many hours,,,
An External Battery Pack is only option.
It's a separate little box,,,,you just plug it into Laptop's power adapter port..
They usually come with both A/C Recharger and a Car Recharger.
You can run on Laptop's battery,,then when you get a "Low Battery" signal ,,
Plug in the external battery and continue working uninterrupted.
Most externals are relatively Large Capacity,,,usually about twice the original batt's size.
So if you get 2~3 hours use from original,,,
You'd expect 4~5 hrs from the external.
When Totalled with Original Batt's run time,,,
You'd have about Triple the RunTime..
The Nuisance of an External Battery is,,,it's External...lol:)
Another "little box" with a wire dangling from it,,,plugged into laptop.
Most are fairly small & lightweight though.
You can Search the 'Net for "External Laptop Battery" and get a variety of results to check out.
Ebay usually has much better prices than Retail Stores,Computer stores,,,and even online stores.
Often for exact same products.
"Frugal Shopping" is not so much to save a few $$,,,
It's that you can usually get a Bigger Battery for however much you do want to spend.
Or,,"twice the size" for a few $$ more.
Some types of Items are quite consistent in pricing from any source.
Laptop Batteries & External Batteries are things which vary Widely in pricing.
Here's a few places:
http://www.mobilephi.com/product/battery/external_laptop_battery.htm
http://www.batterygeek.net/SearchResults.asp
http://cgi.ebay.com/8-10-hours-Dark-Blue-Universal-external-laptop-battery_W0QQitemZ230103866816QQcategoryZ11169QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
.................................................
I'd suggest choosing an external battery which includes a
Car Adapter to charge the battery.
And obviously,,make certain you get one suitable for your particular laptop.
The RunTime claims of "any/all" batteries & battery powered devices tend to be a bit optimistic.
Or,it's stated "according to IDEAL conditions"
If you determine that you want "X" amount of power,,,or that a certain size is Advertised as being a size that suits yor needs...
It's Probably wise to NOT expect 100% of claimed runtime,,,or chose next larger size.
Also check Warranties,,,it's not unusual to see Big Differences in length of warranty..
Good Luck,,hope any of that helps
***Keep looking for a Car Adapter for your laptop also.
I'm sure they are out there somewhere:)
That will help you stay Charged Up & ready to go,too.

the length of time a laptop battery's last depends on the make and model of laptop some are better than others but typically it between 3 and 6 hours continuous use if it less than this the battery is on the way out as for longer lasting battery there isn't any but what you can do is buy a spare battery and use it when the other one runs down

Yes, look for the replacement battery for your laptop (i.e. do a google search for the make/model of your laptop like so:
"Compaq presario v2000 replacement battery" without the quotes), and once google returns the results, you will be looking for a "long lasting" or you can compare the factory specs. (i.e. the cells or battery life) to the aftermarket replacement...don't get tricked by price either, sometimes you get a cheaper battery..but you get it and within a few weeks you find out it's a dud! always look for the replacement technology as well
*very important: if your factory battery is Li-ion, get a Li-ion replacement, however, if your factory battery is Nimh...be sure you get a Nimh, because Li-ion requires a special built in charging circuit to ensure the li-ion battery doesn't explode!

As someone said, get an extra battery. If you can afford it, get a higher capacity one while you are at it (and if you can carry it). Your manufacturer should have a car charger available for purchase, or be able to tell you where to get one. I have a Dell laptop and a car charger for it. Works fine. But verrrry pricey. You really have to need it or want it very badly. FWIW.

I suffer from the same problem. I usually have a second battery with me, so I can swap when necessary.
A few other things that might help:
- Try to minimise the use of the CD-ROM/DVD drive as this costs a lot of energy
- Set the brightness of the screen to the lowest workable position
- Use the "Stand-by" function if your laptop has one, as the booting (starting up) of your laptop can take up to 30% of your battery
All the best!

there are standard sized batteries available with Laptops. now, for instance, if ur battery gets drained quite often, u could just buy a couple of batteries more, and carry them Fully charged with u. also u do get hand pumping insant chargers, u would get them at the local airport too.
so dont panic,. there are many options for u.

they do sell cigarette lighter adapters which have outlets on them that you can plug your laptop power cord into. they're pretty cheap too (10-30 dollars). if you don't want to go that route, you could possibly disable hardware you don't really use, although, your laptop might already do that for you, and you're probably not gonna get that much extra life out of your battery.

If you go to the manufactures they sometimes offer larger batteries. they are heavier but they will last longer. its better if you buy an extra battery of the same type.
