a hess station charges 40 cents less for regular than the lukoil station a block away? how does this make any business sense?

yes ..sometimes a branded co has supply shortage and wanst to slow sales....most stations only sell gas to get you to buy cigs/beer/hotdogs etc.... maybe the high priced gas is closer to hyway and gets enough traffic no matter what price.

well the lukoil gas lasts alot longer than the hess the hess may last for a week and the lukoil can last for two weeks
