Orville and Wilbur were bicycle mechanics. They lived in Ohio and made bicycles. they were always interested in flying and so they were picked to design build and fly airplanes and they were successful. I do not think that they envisioned what it would grow into from those 1st fatefull flights at Kill Devil Hills North Carolina Near Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks. There is a beautiful museum honoring them and their flying machines that I have visited many times. You should go there and see it. They have the place where they actually flew staked out. They also did a lot of gliding there with no motors. And this is not far from the sand dunes that are still used for hang gliding today at Nags Head N.C. This was done in1903. It is hard for me to comprehend how we got to Jets and rocket ships and shuttles from these humble beginnings.

They didn't exactly invent the airplane, they were the first to take a manned flight:

Wilbur Wright was born in the small town of Millville Indiana. There's a museum on the site of the house where he was born:

They owned and operated a bicycle shop in Ohio. They were life long bachelors. Powered flight became their obsession. Wright Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio is named after them.
