For those of you that were kind enough to reply with reassuring words ..... Thank You!! To the person who said "just flush him; it's a damn fish" .... SHAME ON YOU!! When you have an animal be it a dog, cat or fish and have taken care of it daily it becomes part of the family and he wasn't considered "just a fish".

The lose of a pet is always a hard life lesson and doesn't seem to get any easier as you get older either. Sorry to hear of your familys loss. He must have done a wonderful job and must have been very dedicated to keep a betta that long. It sounds as if he has learned much, both fun and sad from the total experience. Good parenting and a good son obviously. I hope he will find another pet he loves as much.

Oh, you will always find the jerks on here. They don't have any knowledge in the subject and just want to write some smartassed answer because they haven't anything intelligent to say, as well as, apparently, have no compassion for living creatures. They probably tie cans to dogs' and cats' tails too. I remember your previous email. I'm sorry about Elmo, but as I said before, he lived for 5 years. This is really a very long time for a betta. You did an excellent job of taking care of him and you should be proud of the job you did. It's not just a fish, it's a member of your family that you love equally. I am sorry for you and your son's loss.

You really took wonderful care of that betta for it to have lived for 5 years - good for you for being a good betta parent. I love our betta - he's so full of personality and fun! I know I'll cry when he dies! It's wonderful when people are compassionate and caring, and I'm glad you've taught your son to be caring and compassionate as well. It's far better to love friends, family, and pets knowing that we'll be sad when we loose them than to wall off our hearts and not feel anything or even mock those who do care.

You are helping make the world a better place with your caring. Don't those who are heartless discourage you.

Chuck E. Cheese could be a worthwhile place, inspite of the incontrovertible fact that it could be extra of a "take a woman offspring and go away your son in the back of with a be conscious" rather of an actual commerce. Your son would be nice as long as you provide him a large style of tokens to instruct how plenty you adore him. only keep in mind which you won't have the ability to commerce lower back whilst your 15 year previous daughter comes abode pregnant, or will become a stripper. you're on your person.

Some people are just insensitive and trying to get 2 points. I hope you can just ignore them, because anyone willing to hurt someone's feelings for 2 points on yahoo answers is probably not a very happy person.
5 and half years is a great lifespan for a betta (some people think they only live for a month or two!) and I commend and thank you for taking such great care of him and teaching your son respect for living creatures.

That's so sad. If your son really enjoyed that fish, after a mourning period has passed, you should take him to the fish store and buy another betta. Name him Elmo Jr.

OOOW It is very hard for kids well and adults too. I was surprised to find out how fish have their little personalities too when I got my first Betta. Give your son a big hug and sugars from me.

oh thats terrible! i don't know if this helps, but when i was your sons age (around) i had a pet die and my family bought me the book "the fall of Freddy the Leaf"...kinda a kid-friendly story about why things die. sounds silly now, but it made things much better for me when i didn't know how to handle the death of a loved one. its NEVER just a fish in my book! ....

my first pet was named Elmo too... :(
