Too be truly 'chaste' you must be a virgin. To acquire 'chastity' then, is to be celibate, since you can't undo your sexual experiences. Many religions feel that the state of chastity benefits humanity by clearing & freeing the mind from physical desires, thereby opening a wider, purer channel in which to receive spiritual grace.

I forget the definition from my catechism classes many years ago but basically chastity is the avoidance of sexual intercourse and other inappropriate sexual contact outside of marriage, and faithfulness to one's spouse in marriage.
Chastity fosters mutual love and trust. Children are reared by their biological parents without the conflicts seen in shared custody, blended families and single parent households. (Unfortunately, in real life there are plenty of other conflicts that stress a marriage. And for other reasons a family might function better without a particular parent, eg a drunk, druggie, compulsive gambler.)
Chastity dramatically reduces the risk of contacting sexually transmitted infections.
