People tend to keep a fued going even if they have no idea what they are fighting about. Fighting and killing each other over nonsense like a pig? Think of L.A.'s gang wars. Or the Palestine / Israili conflict. Or a friend or family member you don't speak to because they upset you long ago. He's trying to show just how silly it really can be between people. He boils the nature of man and more specifically, the north and south in the US after the Civil war down to a 2 family fued, but points out the absurdity of maitaining animosity after everyone has forgotten why they started fighting in the first place.
