It's mostly a matter of opinion. Ferrets take a lot of time to deal with, but they reward you by being one of the best pets out there. They're such little clowns, and so very intelligent - but they need to be properly trained, and it's a good idea to get one from a good breeder.
Rabbits are good pets as well, but they, too, require handling to get them used to being held and stroked. They can be moody and reclusive, and being natural prey animals, it takes both the owner and the pet to figure out "safe" ways to play.
This decision also depends on where you'll be keeping the animals - free range or in a cage. If you have the space and time, both make great free-range pets that can wander around your house, or a set-apart room in your house at will. This allows much more freedom for the animal, but increases the risk of accidents.
Having had a rabbit, I'd probably say that a ferret is a better pet, but only if you take the time to -train- it. It's essential - they have minds of their own, and are sneaky, smart little guys. They make wonderful pets, but as you should for any animal, proper care and training is required for the good of both the pet and the owner.

really depends on what you are looking for in a pet, If you want one that you will only pull out once in a while and pet it, then go with a rabbit. A ferret is more along the lines of a cat or dog, in that they are playful and do enjoy/require being handled, they can be trained to use a litter box, can be taken for a walk (on a leash) and overall are more interactive than a rabbit. Of course you still have to feed and clean up after both of them (and yes they both do smell but the ferret can have its scent glands removed)

If I were you, I would ABSOLUTELY buy a rabbit. I already have a rabbit and I can tell it's the best pet ever. It's not like a dog... It doesn't need much care and they are really cute when they are babys. They're not really too dirty and they don't smell. As for the ferrets, they can sometimes be very aggressive and you'll have to spend so many hours playing with it, otherwise it will feel lonely and isolated. They also smell awfully!!! To sum up, I would TOTALLY advise you to buy a rabbit.
Remember my words,

Having had a rabbit before, and now having 5 ferrets, i would defiantly say FERRETS!!!
Dont get me wrong, ferrets are a ton of work. They need lots of time out if they are kept in a cage, and they need people interaction. But you can train them, they will use a litter box 80% of the time.
They have such great personalities and just make things better. Some have an odor... i dont think they stink, their bedding just needs to be washed every week or so. There are also alot if health issues that you need to be aware of, for instance you cant put them in the regular bedding because of breathing issues, or they have to have special litter cuz they clay stuff can cause infection, and the floor of their cages cant be open wires... it will hurt their little paws....
If you have any questions please ask... Ferrets are a lot of work but like what was stated before they are very rewarding.

I have had ferrets all my life and I think they are far more entertaining than rabbits (which my mother has as pets.)
Ferrets, if they are raised correctly are extremely loving and very funny little creatures. They love to be cuddled and crave interaction. I have five and would not part with any of them.
Hope this helps!
By the way, ALL animals smell. It is up to the owner to keep their houses and the pets clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had rabbits all my life,I now have a Holland Lop that lives inside he is litter trained which get rid of the whole smell thing, they don't need baths like ferrets,as long as you hide wires and things they can chew on that will harm them they can run in the house and will go in there litter box to go to the bathroom. If you want to get either one please consider rescuing a pet.

I have a ferret, and that Clarissa chick is wrong, ferrets don't roll around and eat their poo. Both rabbits and ferrets are a lot of work, and you have time to clean their cage three or more times a week, otherwise your house will stink. I had a rabbit growing up, and it bit me all the time and it never wanted to be held or played with...at least my ferret likes to play. That being said however, I wouldn't recommend either pet.
I can't remember too much about my pet rabbit, since my mom took care of it most of the time...(I remember her complaining about it alot though)
Here are all the things I know about my fiance and I's ferret
1. They get into EVERYTHING..they love to chew on rubber or plastic so anytime we let her out we have to hide the remote controls (she chews off the buttons) and our shoes, bags, and cords. She also chews on leather and has ruined many of my purses.
2. They love to dig...forget having house plants
3. They love to hide things...our ferret likes to hide bras, socks, pens, pencils...pretty much anything she can pick up with her teeth and move.
4. It's tempting to leave them in their cages where they can't get into anything, but you just can't do that..it's just plain mean. They like to run around and explore things...and you have to let them out of their cage at least once a day...and make sure you have a litter box outside of the cage becuse they will poo and pee on the floor otherwise.
5. They are very cute, and loveable, but soooo much work. If you have time and patience they make wonderful pets. I love my ferret but I will never get another one again!

None, they both stink really bad. But if I really had to decide I would choose a rabbit because unlike ferrets, they don't eat or roll in their own poop. Rabbits are also prettier.
