My garden was turfed almost 2 years ago. They laid a full lawn, which started growing nicely. Now, though, there isn't a blade of grass to be seen, but my plants (and a load of wild plants and weeds) are doing fine. I'm fed up cos I have the most unattractive, bare soil garden. Can anybody tell me what might have caused this?

Ps I know what to do about it (seed some more grass).

PPS All my neighbours' gardens are fine, so it can't be a local problem.

There could be an issue with the soil ecosystem or soil pH. Have you had any of this tested?

I have known fungus to create areas unfriendly to turfgrass, but normally, it's pretty restricted in area. maybe you have a large fungus system infecting your soil. Do you have mushrooms?

pH (too high or too low) can cause nutrient uptake issues for all plants. Soil, however can be buffered with lime (to sweeten) or sulfur (to sour).

Your soil may be badly compacted.. do you have dogs that might run the area constantly? there could be several reasons.

I would consult a soil scientist. perhaps someone in the plant sciences area of a local university.

Sorry to not be more helpful.

Good Luck!

It's kinda hard to tell without knowing how the lawn was cared for during this time, like when cutting it do you adjust the height of the lawnmower blades at different times of the year? Or keep it on the lowest setting all the time, and completely scalp it with bare patches of soil kicking up? (my dad's always complaining about his sister doing it when she cuts my grandma's lawn).

Do you treat it with lawnfeed? water in the summer when needed? or just let the weather do all the work? Tried that "evergreen moss & weedkiller" for lawn advertised on TV?

For further help, a copy of "The Lawn Expert" by D.G. Hessayon is indispensible to help look after you lawn + choose what type to use (among other things)... and it only costs £7.99, so not exactly breaking the bank.

sounds like chafer grubs to me.. they eat the roots of the grass and thus kill it.. daddy long leg larvae.. a complete mare for you.. I would did out the soil to at least a foot and replace it with new topsoil .. there might be an environmentally friendly killer you can buy for them a nematode perhaps? Goodluck.. it is possible I guess that they were just lying in wait for the new turf or they were carried in in the new turf... tricky to prove either way..
