System Restore doesn't do it, neither does unplugging and replugging, restarting etc. It seems clear that there is a resource (IRQ) problem, but the system will not let me untick the automatic settings, regardless of whether my logitech mouse or the laptop's mousepad is currently in there. I also seem to lose the logitech mouse all the time, even though the driver is installed, it doesn't turn up in device manager, and when it does it is gone the next minute. Any clever ideas?

P.S. I love my mouse, but I will buy a new one if necessary. Thanks for the idea to test the mouse on someone else's computer. It's been 8 years...

My idea isn't clever, but will probably work. Buy a new mouse. Forget PS2. Modern computers often don't even have PS2 ports, and the PS2/USB adapters don't always work. Get a USB mouse. If that still doesn't work, then there is something wrong with your computer.

logitech is notorious for forcing upgrades. i had a similiar problem with my keyboard/mouse set. i reinstalled the software and that would sometimes work but i eventually had to create a new profile and finally re-install windows and then logitech finally came with an update to resolve the issue. odds are, if you had this mouse for 8 years, its time to let it go into retirement. put it in a good nursing home and visit it frequently but getting a new mouse should be the easiest solution

I think I would probably start by trying to use the mouse on someone else's computer to determine if the mouse has just decided to die. If the mouse works on another pc then the problems lies within your pc.

Buy a new mouse...8 years in human years is 56!..and that is
rather old for a mouse! If windows detects it and then it is gone..
its like it is on life support and keeps flat lining. (I would say its central nervous system (cable) is cancerous).
Mount it on a wall...if you had it for that long, it should be remembered. sob..sob..

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
