Yes, it is definitely possible to be in multiple guilds at the same time- but before you go rushing in to put in applications for each one, you might want to double check and make sure that the missions you go on don't conflict with other guilds. Normally, this won't be the case, but there may be exceptions.
One example that I can think of involves the Thieves Guild quest: Arrow of Extrication. You'll have to steal it from Fathis Aren, which is easier said than done- it seems like no matter how high your Sneak skill is, most of the monsters in the area WILL see you. And if you SHOULD steal the arrowhead while Fathis is looking, it WILL count as you stealing from a member of the Mage's Guild, which will punish you by making you collect ingredients.
So, join every guild, if only for the experience and adventure, but be careful- just in case.
