It is a true shot-for-shot adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel. It is even said that the fighting styles were really quite unknown and varied from historian to historian so they went with what they knew. The movie is not supposed to be historically accurate as it is told through the eyes of a Spartan warrior and what the fellow Spartans imagine with what he is saying. Great movie.

As said above its only loosly based on the spartans. the directer even admits to changing some of the fighting techniqes to make it look "cool"

I think however it was told in the best way posible for its genre. The spartens would of told it that way, they would of loved the way the ledgend was told, and I really belived they would of been happy to see it if they could.

IMDB has some info in its trvia section for the movie.

# According to an interview with IGN.com, Director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartan's phalanx) were purposefully changed - making them historically inaccurate - so they'd "look cool" and work better for movie purposes

The movie never claims to be historically correct. It is based somewhat loosely on Frank Miller's 1998 comic book mini-series. Changes from history were made by Miller and Snyder so as to appeal to a wider audience and create a more exciting and visually stunning action movie, rather than a typical historical epic.

It is an awsome movie. It is historicaly accurate. Apart from the 20 story elephants and the giant they threw in there for fun.
The 300 also forgets the 700 Thebans and Thespians that also perished making a stand while the Arcadians and rest of the Greek forces went south in retreat.

Peace

It's based loosley on the legends of the Spartan warriors, so in that retrospect it is real. The movie however was not historically accurate, though it is probably one of the most kick a** movies i've ever seen!

It looks pretty good, the only thing that is stupid is 300 men against a thousand. No one can go against that huge army. But hey its just a movie right.
