Where does Sidney Crosby rank compared to some of top NHL players of the past?(Orr, Howe,Hull, Gretzky, Carpenter, Bossy, etc.) Would he and some of the NHL's top players fare well with smaller zones, and larger goalie pads?

Crosby, with his skills, maturity at his young age, and skating ability, would have played at a high level of success in any era...with Orr, Howe, Hull, or Rocket Richard in the original 6 team era...or with Gretzky, Lemieux, Bossy et al in the expansion era(s). Granted, the game has changed over the years, but great players seem to rise above the others, regardless of the competition. Whether he will rank among the greats, only time will tell, but he certainly has all the skills needed to reach those heights. Scoring 100+ points in his first two years in the league is a definite indication of his potential for greatness.

He has potential, that's all. He does not rank anywhere NEAR any of them yet, because he has yet to really accomplish anything.

If you want to compare skills, he does have some of the same traits as Gretzky did: passing and an ability to anticipate what everyone is going to do. He does not have the wicked shot of a Hull and unlike Howe he will probably always need to be paired with someone to dig the puck out of corners and make sure he doesn't take cheap shots.

Great players (and Crosby WILL be in this group I'm sure) fare well with virtually any rules. As well, Crosby is more of a set-up man than scorer, these guys make everyone on the ice better.

Currently, Sid the Kid ranks as the top player in the game. However, all-time, it is tough to say because he hasn't even played two seasons yet. Give him time, let him start racking up a hell of a lot of points in his career, then start all the talk about top players of all-time. He does have amazingly rare talent that really can't be taught, but let's not jump too quickly to conclusions that he's along the same lines as Gretzky because the Kid has only played about 2 years so far, whereas Gretz played 20 seasons, so let's just watch and see what happens.

Honestly, as I have gotten older I have realized that your question is one that is best asked at the end of a players career. I understand that you mean at this point in his career compared to the same point of the greats' respective careers.

Keep in mind that Lemeiux, Gretzky, Carpenter, and Bossy played at a time when the rules were different than they are today. I don't think he'd be scoring as much now if they kept the game the way it was. It isn't a reach to assume that the NHL modified it's rules in order to make it easier for talented players to flourish.

I haven't seen him play yet, for the Flyers are too awful to watch.

He doesn't really rank yet. He shows the potential to be right up there with them. I'm a Pens fan and see them doing whatever they can to keep him and see him as a franchise player. Yet that doesn't mean he is one of the best yet. Give him time though.

Crosby has real talent and he'd probably rank as one of the best in any era. It's a rare thing.
