It sounds to me that you have to change out the thermostat. Thermostats, even the older dial types, are delicate and susceptible to electrical surges. The switching in the thermostat may have failed and is stuck at the last entered temperature. If you have heat only, the wiring is simple.

If this does not solve the problem, the aqua stat is going and may have to be replaced by a qualified tech.

I would get a new thermostat. If that doesn't work, then you'll need to call an AC/Heating specialist.

sounds like it could be the thermorsate or the relays for the furnance elements
