I love J-pop and J-rock...
I usually look up the lyrics in Kanji (How to pronounce the lyrics) And find the translation... I listen to ovr 70 j-pop/j-rock songs, all of which I know the translation to and sing along in japanese... It's fun =D
I guess its also to do with the fact J-pop/J-rock songs sound like they have meaning, where as nowadays its hard to find a good song with good meaning.. most songs in english are plainly pointless

Well, probably because music is music, no matter what form or laguage it is in. if the beat and sounds is good to you and the vocals sound nice, you are bound to like it even if you don't understand it. Plus very good songs/vocal performances will perform emotionally enough that you can understand the emotions of the song even if you don't know what they are saying.
Also, it's not really odd to listen to music you don't understand. In the U.S people often listen to spanish/latin songs, or songs that have spanish in them because there are a number of spanish artists.
Another reason probably is because of the difference in the sound J-pop and Japanese music in general is pretty unique. It has a unique sound that is different from other country's music, even if it's in the same style (J-rap/j-hip hop for example sounds very different from traditional rap/hip hop) and that often pleases listeners to hear something different.
Not to mention much of the music sounds uplifting and upbeat. Makes you feel good listening to it.
If you want to know what exactly they are singing about, just do a lyric search on the artist and song and you are bound to find the lyrics and know how to sing along.
I love jpop also, and although for a long time I didn't understand it, I found it to be good music.

You don't have to understand the words to like J-pop. Apparently, a lot of people don't understand the words in English songs either.
I noticed this 10 years ago when my English wasn't very good. I couldn't understand Wallflower's "One Headlight", I was surprised that none of my friends could tell me what it meant. That doesn't stop them from buying the albums. They could only say, "it's a love song, I guess." (lol)
"Come on try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than in the middle
Me & Cinderella
We put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight"
See what I mean? (lol)
