Usually either a star or mesh topology is best due to the fact that in a bus or ring network if one system goes down the whole network goes down then the problem arises of finding which machine failed. Where as in a star network if the central device goes down that would be the only time the whole network would fail. The main disadvantage of a mesh is the cost.

Star, because the network is broken down into segments. Am I doing your networking homework for you?

the star network allows you to monitor EACH leg individually, but if you are jsut wanting to know the quickest when it goes down... the ring would do that, jsut because if part fails, you know it instantly.
