People, people, people:

There WAS NO year "zero." The first century went from the years 1 to 101 (though at that time, they did not measure things that way).

Thus the 20th century went from 1901 to 2000, and the first day of the 21st century was Jan 1, 2001. The name goes with the ending year, not the starting year.

Confusing, yes, but that's the convention.

Because years 1 through 100 were the first century, not century zero. There have only been 20 full centuries in the CE - we are in the 21st.

See
nothing wrong in writing the way you say.
but
numbers are different from years
atleast when described verbally

century is the word used for 100 years
and thats the way the world understands

year 0 to 99 was first century

and thats why 1901 to 1999 was 20th century
and 2001 onwards its 21st century

Think way back to the first century. What number was in the 100's column? Zero. The first century years are numbered 1-99. We didn't put a 1 in the 100's column until the first century was over and we were into the second century.

Think of age: During a baby's first year, it's 3 mos old, or 6 mos, or 11mos. On its first birthday, we celebrate the completion of one year. Then, right up to age 1 year a 364 days, we say it's one year old. Yet it's living its second year.

Think of it as when you are born. You are not 1 until you live your first year.

So a century actually starts at 0 years 0 month 1 day and last until 99 years and 11 months and 31 days.

That is why. Hope you find this helpful.
