Let me put it bluntly:
Gays are fighting and dying right now for a country that sees them only as cannon fodder and second class citizens.
So who is anybody to say they aren't worthy of respect, dignity and equal rights, at least they've earned it.
I don't see Bushes kids in Iraq, or Falwells, or O'Reilly's, etc. so again I ask, who's earned the right to expect a little more than just a 'screw you' from the conservative right?
For those who didn't clue in, I'm all for gays openly serving, that's the least they deserve.

Over the past 2 days if I had a dollar for every time I saw a gay military question I would call in for a week at work. Yes its okay. Not like gay dudes are running around in skirts doing cat calls to the guys walking by. I think that gays and straights can help us win the war. Some people just want to make a difference. What difference does it make if they are gay or straight. I don't see a problem with that.

The idea that one wishes to defend their interests in their nation is a deep and personal one. I commend anyone who wishes to do so.
However in the military it has been discovered that for the most part gay men and women have a propensity to try to be more lenient to understanding someone else's position, thus raising potential for questioning orders. It may be stemmed from the fact that they have had to deal with chiding and ridicule from society at a deep level themselves, and may see things from a victim's point of view. Now, that's a general point of view - not all inclusive.
If you second guess something in the military one of several things might happen, the most important being loss of life and the second being severe property damage due to failure to act immediately - without question and without reservation.
I am in the military, and I have seen people from all walks of life come and go for the past 11 years. I have worked with people who were civillian government contractors that were gay, and I have to say that these folks questioned a lot of what we did, and wanted to know why. There is no why... I am ordered to - that's why.
First of all I am limited to what I can say about something, he knew this but persisted on questioning things within the government. It's the government, it's your job so follow instructions as given. It's an ordered society without vagueness or ambiguity to duty and orders. Period. Sorry out there, but that's my own personal experience on the subject. No offense intended. Just thought I'd share.

I'm another one that did his time in the army with no regrets - just wanted to do my duty and did it well. I found out that we all bleed red regardless of orientation or race. I see too much influence placed on whether someone is gay, black, hispanic, or polka dot...I think we are all americans and should all be treated equally first without emphasis on race, sex, creed etc...I think General Pace was not representing the majority of americans but was sstating his own personal oppinion. While he may be wrong and I disagree with him, he still has the right to say his piece as well.

Gay's serve in the military today. Where do you get the idea that they don't?
Sexual behavior is regulated by the military. You can be kicked out by hiring a prostitute, having an affair, or being openly gay.
The bottom line is to keep your sex life to yourself.

When you are put in harms way, you need to have full confidence in your mates. Unfortunately, many of our troops are VERY uncomfortable and distrust gays. Regardless of General Pace's personal views or mine (I don't know why it's a big deal if your gay, who cares), the Armed Forces must be a cohesive unit that has trust in each other, first and foremost. Political correctness is, to me, of less importance.
Some are unaware that the Roman Army actally promoted Homosexuality in some instances, to bring the troops closer together. There's a different take, huh?

As a veteran, there is absolutely nothing wrong with gays in the military. Other nations allow them to serve openly. It's totally "unamerican" not to allow it here due to the homophobes around.

I don't see a problem with it, We are already there. I served for 4 years. I did my job. I wasn't there to scope out the other soldiers. I was there to serve my country. And that's what I did, to the best of my ability.
