Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson, who wrote 23 of the first 30 books -- 1-7, 11-25, and 30 -- was the first "Carolyn Keene". She was born July 10, 1905 in Ladora, Iowa, and died of lung cancer in Toledo, Ohio, on May 28, 2002. Mildred was still a working newspaper columnist when she died at age 96.

Carolyn Keene doesn't actually exist. The name was used as a pseudonym for the author, because the publisher actually hired many multiple authors to write those books.

Carolyn Keene is a group of people that wrote the books all together. don't you think she'd be dead by now otherwise?
