A lot of good answers have already been given. Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Puerto Rico are top examples of modern European board games that have become popular around the world. However, the overwhelming concensus among players of moderately casual board games is that Settlers of Catan is the number one game of all time. The board game as a form of entertainment has really undergone tremendous refinement in Europe (especially in Germany) in the last decade or so, and Settlers of Catan deserves a large part of the credit for that. Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Puerto Rico are all excellent reflections of this trend. A few more that are also worthy of consideration are Web of Power, Saint Petersburg, and Power Grid. These games make you think, but not as deeply and intensly as Chess or Go. As such they provide a great blend of entertainment from the game _and_ opportunity to socialize; many older board games are either so complex that they occupy all of your attention or so pointless that they add no value on top of whatever socializing you are doing while playing them. The games I have mentioned are good for medium size groups (most take around 3-5 players) of moderately casual players. All are good, and Settlers of Catan is still the best.

Backgammon ! It might be a little less cerebral than chess but it's much more compulsive. It is a game that involves chance as well as skills. Any great master can loose a game against a beginner but two games ... ? The probability begins to be astronomical. It's a game of psychology. Winning is understanding your partner, their style of play and being flexible enough to vary your own. It is an ancient game going back thousands of years, although popularised by the French, hence the French name. It draws upon the most primeval of human instincts of the hunter and the hunted. It's also a lot of fun.

Well, according to a very popular board game resource website, the best Board Game out there is Puerto Rico. And judging by the list of games and the descriptions, there's more to board games than the regular Monopoly and Candyland fare. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=game&sortby=rank
If you're still playing games like Monopoly, my personal recommendation would be Ticket to Ride. It's simple to learn, but fun with good amount of strategy for people who are new to these kinds of games. And who doesn't like playing with trains? You have destination tickets that need to be completed, and using sets of colored cards you lay track to connect cities. A great game for kids and adults to play together!

Ticket to Ride IS a good game, but my favorite right now is Carcassonne. It can even be played online (as Toulousse) at www.games.asobrain.com.

Go. so simple to learn Asian children have been playing for centuries. but so complex that no computer has ever been able to master it or beat a grand master of the game. takes seven to learn, seven years to learn how to win.
