Cliques are a real problem and very damaging, both to the kids excluded and to the sociopaths running the cliques. They actually get status from being rejecting, judgemental, and mean.
We've been homeschooling 14 years now, and for the most part have been blessedly free of them. A great theatre troupe we had was 'infiltrated' by a couple of very snotty girls, one manipulative boy, and four hateful fundamentalist Christians. What had once been a jolly, united group turned into a group of kids getting 'voted out of' clubs, kids not talking to other kids - even some kids ignoring parents!!!!
A handful of us who were distressed by this tried to make a change, but the instigators are the children of the director's assistant, so nothing could change. We left, life's too short.
At a new theatre group, everything chugging along great until last week, three girls who'd been to high school and just started homeschooling tried to bring their garbage to this new group. The director was so on the ball, called them out, criticized their disruptive nature to the group, and sent an email to all parents and theatre kids saying this will not be tolerated and she expects this is the last email on that subject. So far so good.
The adults involved need to take strong measures.

I would stop them completely...exactly, everyone deserves to feel good about themselves and can't if they're not accepted into a certain clique.
It's stupid because nobody can get along with anybody from another clique...and if you're friends w/ someone from another clique then nobody can know, because if someone found out they would act like the whole world just came crashing down

No I wouldn't. I'm not the most "popular" girl in school. But cliques help kids realize what the real world is like and it helps them build a stronger mind. It helps them learn how to handle tough situations where they have to make decisions by themselves with no one's help. Yeah, I hate cliques, but they are a part of life and they help us, if you see it my way.

I would put a stop to cliques in a hot second! Groups should be about including people who want to be included - not excluding.

I feel it is in every ones best interest to stay fluid when it comes to friends. By this I mean, keep an open mind, get to know a lot of people and do not tie yourself down to just one group of people. This way you learn so much more in life and have much more to share with others too.

I don't like them-watching my daughter grow up and get her feelings hurt isn't fun for me BUT I think that is how you learn about friendship and it is a part of life.

as long as there are three or more people involved in any organized event or happening, two or more will bond together for mutual protection. It is human nature and rules and you cannot change it.
