To Create a Backup for your Personal Use, install AnyDvd from lavasoft.com it has a 20-30 day trial period.
I can recommend this as a great and legal way to back up your Personal DVDs. With anydvd, the Copies will work

If the DVD has a protection, it seems you don't have the right to copy it, do you ?
Or is it a personal DVD and an error message which is false ? Be clear, it will be easier to help you.

you're trying to copy a commercial dvd to get around it get dvd shrink from here http://www.soft32.com/download_75587.html it's totally free and shrinks dvd's so they fit on a recordable dvd without loss of quality and removes copy right protection at the same time

DVDshrink does not work on drm, you need to decrypt first. Fair use is just in your castle and not sharing with others. You can burn to 2 discs or convert to avi. Post no bills/avis!

try dvdfab to copy to harddrive and then whatever you are using now to burn
