Every election is a response.
The election of R.R., in 1980 was a re-affirmation in the long held belief in American "Can Do" attitude.
It was a direct response to the growing feeling of hopelessness brought on by the failure of "big government" to solve problems.
An examination of issues and problems in US history of the 60's 70's and 80's, may show a variety of distinctions and discrepancies, but the over all theme that separated the Reagan vision of America against the prevailing view was one that stressed the American will and ability to win and through that victory the goodness of our cause will prevail.
Crises will not end but the essential elements of Americanism
i.e. freedom, family and faith can overcome and provide opportunities that we may not even be able to predict such as the fall of the U.S.S.R. This was the message of Ronald Reagen and it was a response to the problems we faced in the 60's and 70's that our big government programs could not solve. That a free and vigorous people with faith in God and love for each other CAN!

Reagan was nominated and elected on the basis that he was a " household face"......... he made good presidental timber because he was known to all T.V.- owning Americans as " that nice guy on the Death Valley days ''.television show. The GOP had other motives in mind..........after the very controversal Nixon/Agnew/Ford years, they knew they could BURY THE PAST with this T.V./Movie Star. With Reagan in the news, many folks in the USA would quickly forget about the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin L. King, Watergate, Nixon's pardon , etc.

First and foremost, being 53, I lived through that era and there was no "Reagan revolution." He was just another conservative republican president, no better or worse than those before him.
