Yes our eyes do play tricks on us don't they? I've had this happen to me many times. I wish I had an answer, but I don't. I'm curious to know about this myself.

I don't have evidence or citation for this, but what I was taught about vision is that we actually don't see in the center of our vision as that is where light goes into our retinas and reflected back on our lens. That means that our brain fills in the middle details. That's why sometimes we see things differently on the second glance.
