It will depend on whether you are looking at it from the ethical, religious or legal point of view.
Some religions forbid suicide as human life is sacred.
Many countries still outlaw euthanasia or assisted suicide.
But of course, if the person is seriously terminal with no whatsoever hope, it would be natural for the loved ones of the sick person to think of alleviating and easing the dying person's pain and suffering quickly. Of course this should only be an option if it is the dying person's wish.

Our society has been so influenced by biblical interpretation that suicide is just offhandedly denied to all people. Our laws against suicide came from this biblical interpretation.

There is no reason to force a person to live in pain, especially if they are going to die anyway. If an animal is in pain most veterinarians will recommend putting them to sleep, but a human is expected to suffer just because suicide is not supported in the Bible.

I am a Christian, but I believe that people should have the right to choose suicide over suffering, especially when they are going to die. It is your life and you should choose your own destiny.

Take care,
Troy

Suicide is your ultimate right. Assisting someone is not. Oregon has had assisted suicide laws on the books for 10 years now. You may want to see how it's worked for them. The gloom and doom stuff didn't appear to happen.
It is very sad when someone commits suicide. My wife did and it's a horrible thing, but I understand why.

It is proven thru the medical history that the most difficult cures were made in the last moments of dismay and hopelessness. No body knows who may die at what time and if some one say he / she will die because of cancer or anything like that, its rubbish. May be a cure is discovered soon before that and he is saved, then why to suicide.

Before my mother passed,There were several months that she suffered. All my family knew she was dieing but hoped that there would be a chance she will pull though:We were all there at her bed went she died, It was not like any of us imagined, she had a very painful death. When she was dead, I finally saw she was pain free, for the first time in months. No more suffering for her.Even though I saw her suffer, there wasn't one time I thought about helping her end that.We all wanted mum still here and hoped that she wouldn't suffer.I guess it was most selfish of us all.

"OK" is kind of strange in this context.

It is acceptable to me, though I would make sure that
all other options are explored and that the person was
not under undue influence.

Perhaps, a more personal question: Would I help
if someone wanted to die?

Having watched my mother battle terminal cancer
and her complete fear of the pain at the end, yes,
I would help. As it happens, pain meds could help
her and it wasn't necessary - but if her fears came
to fruition, I would have been there.

Yes.

Assisted suicide should be reserved only for those who are terminally ill, in pain, with little time left. Dying in pain is no way to live....we wouldn't dare let our pets live in agony, why would we let our loved ones live in agony.

No, but to do anything about it would still be considered murder or assisted-suicide so the law forbids it. It depends on the healthcare giver and their level of expertise. You wouldn't want to be "assisted" if they would botch the job, would you? How about if they went to prison for it?

Its funny how humans will put their dogs down when they are suffering but not their own kind.
Yes I would approve assisted. It would have to be thoroughly diagnosed and researched per individual of course.

And "Niks" there is a cure for everything? please, enlighten me..what is the cure for cancer?
Clearly you have never watched someone die from a painful illness.

I don't know, personally i think they should live until they are naturally taken away, but who wants to suffer for so long? But i believe nobody has the right to take someone's life whether the person wants them to or not
