I went to both stores last night for help with mailbox questions and people were just standing around. I asked a guy for help and he told me he gets paid by the hour so why not. Useless.

I was frustrated because most of the people just pointed the general direction of where mailboxes might be. I finally found the area where they were and had to rifle through about an hour worth of products and options.

It depends on the person, but they dont seem to be as helpful as 10 years ago, before the onset of lowes...it seems when there was only home depot, they hired people with experience....I spend so much time in both, i know where everything is, and I prefer to just help myself....when i ask them about anything...all i get is a deer caught in the headlights look.

You asked the question and I feel obligated to answer.

I have been in Home Depot and Lowes enough to know where basically everything is. Needing help to find something is really not necessary with the signs. Please do not think I am trying to be smart but I pass by 100's of mailboxes everyday ( as you I'm sure) and certainly know how they can be constructed. There are rules in some areas on how close to the road and what the post must be made of but for the most part quite simple. If you acted how you sound for your question I would not want to help you either. PS If a snow plow knocks it over the road Commision will pay for it. In my area they give you a $35 certificate to Home Depot.

Sounds like poor management. A couple of the stores in my area are the same way. I shop at 3 different Home Depots, a Lowes and a Menard's for various items. Only 1 of the Home Depots seems to be well managed and have all knowledgeable and helpful employees. All the other stores are hit and miss. I try and avoid them if I need help.

I can only assume that those of you who are having bad experiences must live on the coasts? Here in Ohio, I have had nothing but good luck. I find the folks at Lowes to be a little more knowledgeable than Home Depot. I generally go to the Lowes in Fremont, OH or the one and Perrysburg, OH and find both of them to be staffed with very helpful people.

The people in the Home Depot by my house are a bunch of dumb kids. I was getting a window blind that needed to be cut a service they are supposed to provide. It took 4 trips to 2 different stores. Every time it was either the machine is broken or no one is available to cut it. The last trip I had a fit and said get me the manager. AMAZING the same guy who said noone was avalible developed the skill of cutting blinds!! What a lazy son of b.

I find Lowes worse than Home Depot, but you are right! I can walk a mile in the store before I find anyone willing to help. Gee, I applied for a job there once and was told I was overqualified! Overqualified to stand around I guess!

I totally agree.

The only time I seem to be able to get help, is when they think I'm going to spend a lot of money.

And if I need help finding a bolt or screw of a certain size, forget it. Once, the guy said he was going to help me and left me on my own for over a half hour (I only stayed because I was trying to find it myself).

Though, typically, if I need help with a paint project, the people in that department are fairly helpful. But nowhere else.

A little while back, MSN Money did an article on Home De[ot about this very thing, poor help and decline of service. Today there was an article from the new CEO of H.D. saying they were trying to rectify this because of the response to the orginal article-over 10,000 people! Let us see if comes to be!

If you asked a cashier at Lowes and they pointed it is because they are not allowed to leave the register area.
Anyone else not associated with a register shd be able to walk you there.

In our town, the people are very helpful. If they don't know the answer, they promply get more help. As for your experience, you should talk to the manager and make a complaint. I think a lot has to do with them anyway.
