definitly rat :) they are trainable ( as smart as dogs) and will want to be handled more then a mouse. Mice are tiny and very quick and so children will have trouble handling them and will probly end up losing them :)

Rats, definitely. I don't really like either for a pet, but rats are far more intelligent, and can be trained to do many tricks, walk on a leash, and most will even return if they happen to "escape". They form a bond with people, not just one person, either, and can be wonderful companions. I just saw an article the other day about how they are starting to use rats to find "lost" mines and clean up these sites. Some people claim they will be used as drug "dogs" soon.

Mice, on the other hand, are more like fish, very interesting to watch, but not too fun to handle. They do get "tame", but don't expect them to return if they escape from their quarters. I kept dozens of mice for a genetics breeding project once, my mother was so scared that after my paper was done, I'd be to attached to my new "pets" to let them go to new homes. She didn't have to worry, I was more than happy to let them go!!

I would advise that you get a cage set up and ready to use before bringing home either choice. It is so much easier to take your time, set up the cage, shop for toys, food, and other needed items, and then bring home your little friend. These little guys do need to have time to get adjusted to new surroundings, the only time I've ever been bitten was while transitioning mice into my home. They get stressed, too! Plus, those teeth can get them out of the little boxes that the pet stores send them home in, and you don't want "Mission Impossible" playing while you are figuring out were to set the food bowl!

Rats because my brother got a mouse and my dad put it outside and a cat ate everything except the head. It was really gross. But mice are cuter. I don't know, what ever you decide.

Instead of a rat or mice, you should get a Ginnie pig. They look the same just bigger, and easier to hold.

Rats are more trainable and affectionate. They also are larger so are less fragile and easier for kids to handle.
