The apocryphal tale is that he watched London burn from outside the Anchor Tavern on Bankside. This old pub is by the South West corner of London Bridge, which leads up into Gracechurch Street which becomes Bishopsgate and what is now the financial district. St Paul's Cathedral is to the North East and Southwark Cathedral directly to the South. The Palace of Westminster/other famous landmarks are not visible due to the bends in the River Thames. The fire started at Pudding Lane, what is now called The Monument, which is just to the North West of London Bridge.
