I can sew for about 5 inches and then the fabric bunches up. Something seems to be caught so the stitches get very small.
When I look at the bottom of the seam there seems to be extra top thread on the bottom.
I've rethreaded, switched needles, switched thread, cleaned lint. Any ideas?

check your tension

also - I know you said you rethreaded, but did you do it correcttly? That's usually the #1 reason for sewing machine messups - the threading

Usually when I get the loops on the bottom, it's because the bobbin is wound wrong. The thread should be coming off the bobbin from right to left, and it needs to run through the little slot on the bobbin case before you can draw it up through the top of the machine.

If you have played with the bobbin screw, you may have to take it to a repair shop to have them put it back because there's no way to tell how far you moved it. I hate that!

After the problem is fixed, change the needle one more time because it'll be bent from whatever is pulling the thread too tight on top.

Good luck! Don't be afraid to take it in to be looked at!

I had this happen once, after quilting. The tensions -upper and the small screw on the bobbin case, would never work properly afterward. So i just bought a new bobbin case, made sure the thread and bobbin were in correctly, and all was well. For good measure check and make sure under your feed dogs is clear of lint and dust.

check to see if your feed dog( the jagged thing in the throat plate) is to high or to low not letting the material to feed through right. plus if your tensions are not set right it will make you material bunch up. check the small screw on your bobbin holder to see if it is to tight. also check to see what you got your stitches set on
