Perimeter of a rectangle is given by

P =2 (l +w)

where P is perimeter( = 26), l is length and w is width

we know that l= 2w +1

P= 2(2w+1+w) = 2(3w+1)

26 = 2(3w+1)

13 = 3w +1

3w = 12

w = 12/3 =4.

width is 4 inches long.

L + 1 = 2W
2L + 2W = 26
add the two equations together
3L + 2W + 1 = 2W + 26
cancel
3L = 25
L = 25/3 = 8 + 1/3
W = L/2 + 1/2
W = 4 + 1/6 + 1/2
W = 4.66666666
L = 8.33333333
check 2L + 2W = 26

ugly answer: Width = 4 and 2/3 or 14/3 or 4.666666666

w= width
L=length

2w + 2L = 26
L = 2w+1

so

2w + 2(2w + 1)=26

6w=24

w = 4

L-1=2W

26 = 2L +2W = 2L +(L-1) = 3L -1

27=3L, L=9; W = 4
