obviously it moves the car the same as it would when you are driving forward. you can also reverse by just taking you foot off the clutch slowly but by using the accelerator you can reverse a little faster.

You need to think of driving in reverse as the same as driving forward. If you don't provide the engine with fuel (energy) then you aren't going to get anywhere! The same goes for driving in reverse.

add gas = go a bit faster.
When i had my lessons i was taught with just using clutch control for all reversing was ok for lessons but that didn't last long after passing. In my lessons also had to do turn in roads just using clutch control.

gas came from gasoline (American) the fuel, and it turned to be the jargon of the trade.By the time you pass your test, most probably, you also WILL BE USING THE TERM "more gas" instead of "push down the accelerator".
I think it takes less time to say, while the car is moving "time" is important.

It controls the rev's as in revolution per minute. If you add gas you increase the rev's which stops the engine stalling.
