Why would a relatively underdeveloped country like Iran invest billions of dollars to create an atomic energy potential? They claim that it is for their own energy needs, but oil is cheap in that part of the world, and Iran also has a great deal of untapped hydroelectric potential.
My guess is that they really do want to divert at least some of that research into developing weapons. Why would Iran want nuclear weapons? The president of Iran has publicly stated on a number of occasions that he would like to "wipe Israel off the face of the earth." The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran also has close ties to a number of groups and organizations that have been labeled as "terrorists" by the US and the European Union. Even if they did not use nuclear weapons directly against "The Great Satan" (their name for the US), what would prevent them from giving or selling either the technology or nuclear devices to such groups to use against the West in proxy fights?
If you think about it, there aren't many rational reasons that Iran would be spending that kind of money on developing peaceful uses of atomic energy. Is that a chance you are willing to take for yourself and/or your children?

Before you read this be aware that part of it is opinion and part of it is very much a truth in the world...
If you live in America you should care if Iran gains nuclear capability. The Arab nations dislike America because we are powerful, and we support Israel, their enemy. We are also largely Christain, which is something their religion doesn't like. The struggle in the Middle East is a religious war, and it has been going in some form or another for thousands of years.
What this means to us and why we should care is that we are seen as their enemy even if we don't see them as ours. If Iran has nuclear capability they would have the ability and the motive to use it. Even if they didn't hit us we would be forced to respond in some way.
Many of these comments also apply to the idea of North Korea having nuclear capability, by the way.

AH..Okay. Well you see the problem is, what are the guarantees that nuclear power will not be used to harm? What makes you think someone isn't going to cook up a doomsday device? Unless you want to get blown up into tiny little pieces we, the world, must ensure the power that be in Iran will use their nuclear capabilities for the good of their country and not their demise. Of course this is my opinion.Well there you go. Have a nice day. Cheers!

It bothers me when people say "who cares what they do, it's a free world". We all live on the same planet, and if a country wants to do something that affects other countries, they should not be allowed to just do as they please, just like we live in a free country, but we are not allowed to cause harm to others, there are laws we all must abide by as citizens of a country and of the world.
