Let f be the value in fahrenheit, then c, the temperature in Celsius is:
c=(f - 32)*5/9
If f=40, c=40/9 =4.44444444....
OTOH if f=-40
c = (-40-32)*5/9 = -72/9*5 = -40.

the easiest way to figure it out is if you do :
c x 1.8+ 32 = f and
f-32 / 1.8 = c
so 40-32=8
8/1.8= 4.444... or around 4 and a half
