Since the sperm is motile and must seek out the egg to fertilize it much more of them are needed. In humans many of the sperm are lost on their journey to the fallopian tube. So an adequate number must be produced to insure that one makes it.

Metamorphosis is a change in form as an organism develops into adulthood. Tadpoles metamorphose into adults, caterpillars into moths and butterflies etc. Parthenogenesis is a process where a female will produce offspring without male fertilization. Aphids are perfect examples of this process.
