I have almost completely stopped nursing my 5 month old, except for her bedtime feeding. I am not sure whether I should be pumping to relieve my engorgement or if that would produce more milk. This is my third child and I just can't remember exactly how I did it with the other two! Any help would be great. Thanks.

Pump off the excess. Allowing it to stay engorged for a long time can lead to clogged ducts and infection. As you are feeding less and less your milk supply will dry up. There is no need for you to be engorged and in pain.

The pumping will only cause you to produce more milk, so I think the best way to deal with it is to just withstand the engorgement. If you are feeding her less and less your milk supply will ultimately adjust to the demand, but in the meantime it will be painful and frustrating. Hang in there!

My daughter is still nursing, but from my experience (due to increased solids) drastically stopping breastfeeding will not only leave you with a LOT of pain but set you up for infection. As with weaning at any age, you have to gradually reduce the feeding, pumping only for comfortability, rather than emptying. Your supply will gradually reduce on its own due to low demand.

Hypermama: You are not answering the question. She asked for ways to wean safely and her reasons are her own, not a lecture for why she should continue.

You make as much milk as you take out. Reduce one feeding at a time until you make very little milk. So you can pump some if you get uncomfortable but reducing those will help you stop.

pumping is showing your body theres a demand for the milk. so yes it will keep producing. put them up all day unless showering. in a regulsr bra with a sports bra over or something. makes it way less painful. wear padding. it should take a week or less.

That is way to young to wean. If your are still making milk, give it to your baby. What is she 5 months old and eating steak now?

Why on earth would someone who can breastfeed suddenly stop when she is still making milk and her baby still needs it?

Why not pump if you can.
