there can be a lot of reasons. what type if Internet connection do you have? are you downloading anything? there could be line noise. if you are using wireless there might be too much interference.

Close background programs, do a selective startup, turn the graphics in the game down if its like a First person shooter like Halo or Counter Strike then it may be the server thats laggy not your comp.

Get lots of RAM , I was at 512 and had high latency to but 1g now runs nice . A good graphics card helps to.

Your ping represents the number of crabs you have so you have to clean them to get it down.

what speed internet do you have?

try disabling your computers auto updates. they can be updating in the background using up your bandwidth

try disabling your firewall (my norton slows down my counterstrike)

make sure if you have a wireless connection that it is protected incase someone else is using your internet
