I've never heard the term Mitching, I'm guessing it's truanting, if so then yes. Because your mate will get into trouble with the law, and could be sent to prison. Sod the kid, if he wants his parents send down, then okay. but I would want to know being a parent myself.

Talk to your mate's son to stop that behaviour and if he continues to mitch from school, tell his mom, don't treaten him that you'll tell her, but go straight and tell her what he's doing if he refuses to change. It's for his good

Have you asked him what his reason(s) are for skipping school? Keep in mind if you don't tell or someone how punish him yourself he's going to think that it's ok to do this. However keep in mind if this gets back to your friend that he did this and you knew, will your friend be upset with you for not telling? If this was your child that had skipped school and someone knew about it would you want that person to tell you and if they didn't how would your react if or when you found out? Answer that question and you'll have your answer.

No, the son is trusting you with everything so don't. But you have a couple of choices you can drop hints to your best friend or have someone else tell them so then that way you didn't say anything.

mitching or ditching. If I did not tell my friend, it would be only because I packed him up , and took him back to school myself.

How would you feel if your friend kept something like that from you??
Just cos you threaten him and say next time i tell, wont help next time he'll stay away from your house!!

Tell him he has to go back to school, even take him there yourself and then say you wont tell if he goes back.

YES you should. But just tell your friend to tell her son that the school called. No worries :D

Ask him what his reasons are and punish him somehow. You cant let him get away with it altogether. Make him mow the lawn at your house or clean windows so that he can learn a lesson and you wont tell. If he refuses then you sing like bird.

Of course you should - if the situation was reversed I'm sure you'd expect to be told. If you don't this time, will you ever ? You are condoning the behaviour by not acting.
