Hi there, I work as a makeup artist for films and they look good because of a number of reasons:
#1 actresses are often successful because of their natural beauty
#2 the take very very good care of their skin - it's their livelyhood after all
#3 their makeup has been professionally applied with the very best products, often their foundation is airbrushed on
#4 they have someone on standby continuously throughout filming to keep makeup looking fresh and perfect
#5 they are very well lit by profesional lighting crew

Good skincare for us regular joes would be: twice daily cleanse and moisturise. Cleanser should be gentle and have no alchohol, perfume or soap in it. Moisturiser should be light and easily absorbed and have no perfume - very important for oily skin as oily skin is often reacting to a lack of moisture.

Makeup brands are not that important - more expensive ones last longer and the colours are better (more natural shades, more dense pigment etc) but there is a lot of variety out there!

A nice simple makeup regime would be:
#1 Cleanse and moisturise - remember lips!
#2 Apply foundation lightly working outwards from the nose. Make sure your foundation is a good match, yellow undertones are best (no one has a red/pink skin tone unless the skin is irritated - and then you want to hide it!) even for very light or very dark skin.
#3 Apply a lighter shade or highlight product around your eye area, I find that often asian skin tones tend towards a dark eye circle? Make sure it is subtle and well blended
#4 Powder lightly to fix the foundation
#5 Black mascara - you can never go wrong with black!
#6 A nice peachy toned blusher on the apples of your cheeks with a fat, domed fluffy brush - blend blend blend!
#7 Bright lip gloss! Shiny glosses only look good on younger people so take advantage!

MAC do good shades of lippy, blusher and do some fabulous masacaras. I like silicone based liquid foundations - L'oreal do some good ones that are quite affordable and come in good colours. More expensive brands like Estee Lauder and Clinique are very popular, but quite pricey. Try to avoid very heavy, thick foundations. Stick with lighter formulas! And dot it carefully over blemishes rather than using a separate concealer - concealors are often oil-based and don't mix well with your base and dry out the skin.

Best of luck!

I know exactly what you mean, I do the exact same, it took me so long to try to figure out how exactly to do my makeup so I look good for school but not overdone. Ok, first of all, if you're having a major breakup or uneven skin bla bla and need a foundation, don't use one. Use a tinted moisturizer, it looks TONS more natural. If u have a natural tan then I doubt you need bronzer, but if you do, I've found that Nivea makes really good bronzer, and at a good price. For mascara, don't go too dramatic, the perfect low-key mascara for me is Neutrogena Weightless Volume. Blush, if you need it, I've found cream blush to be the best, especially by Maybelline. Keep lips natural, Vaseline works fine, and also, depending on your skin tone, this is a tip that works really good on some and not so good on others. Find a really light blue eyeshadow powder, and using your finger, lightly tap it into the powder, tap it against the side of the container to get rid of loose powder and then swipe it across your top eyelid, just once, it really makes your eyes the focus of attention without showing at all, I don't know how. Hope this helps!

The camera lens can do wonders that is why when you see them in the rags, they look like the rest of us, we don't all have the luxury of having everything airbrushed.
