This country was built off ever minority that came here. The interesting fact everyone ignores is that EVERY group was a minority at one time in the US. The first English and Germans were minorities in their own countries and here. When the Irish came over, they were the minority, had crap jobs and were discriminated against. When the slaves came, same thing. One big difference, the didn't "volunteer" to come over. When Italians came over, same thing. Discrimination, low paying jobs. As hispanics came and continue to come, it's the same thing.
Over time, these groups became part of the fabric of our society and I believe this diversity is what makes us strong. Because we have freedom of speech and diverse cultures and ideas, we have the great benefit of learning new and alternative ways of doing things.
I believe many concerns about immigration today center around two items; assimilation and cost to the public.
I don't know anyone who is anti-immigration. I do know many who are anti-ILLEGAL immigration.
In Los Angeles, 60% of hospital emergency rooms have closed because they cannot afford to deliver free health care. In California, 25% of the prison population is due to illegal immigrants. We can't afford this.
Most immigrants are hard working, family oriented people who want a better life.
This country needs to find a way to secure our borders, first. (stop the bleeding). Then we need to find a way to enable the immigration of decent, hard working people who want to live the "American Dream".
We turn away many highly educated individuals because of immigration rules. If we want to remain free, we should be certain we follow the rule of law.
And yes, African-Americans, Indians, Italians, Mexicans, Irish, and EVERY other ethnic group has contributed greatly to making this country great and beautiful.

It's a fact that "minorities" helped build America. There were Blacks in the South who toiled in the field and were house servants.
The Chinese labored just as hard to help construct the country's vast railroad system.
The Irish helped establish the docks and harbours in several cities...New York...Boston and New Orleans to name a few.
Italians weren't wanted or welcomed in this country. They contributed...the Irish too. Japanese were ridiculously incarcerated in "camps" before and during WW II because of what was perceived to be allegiance to their native Japan.
The government took native lands away from indigenous peoples as we tamed the West.
Women --of all races--also helped build this country and we've never, ever gotten our due.
The late, great Shirley Chisolm..the first woman to run for President...the first African-American to run for president once said that (in her words ) as a *****, she's always known prejudice ...but nothing prepared her for the prejudice she'd encounter just because she was a woman.
That meant because of her gender, she was also subjegated to prejudice from her own people.
America is a melting pot. Many people of all shapes, colors and creeds and genders helped make it the country that it is. Has it always been a great and storied history? No, there's plenty I'm ashamed of....but we have it so much better than so many other countries.
The greatest thing we have is that we can openly state that this country isn't perfect. That's freedom.
I'll get off my soapbox now.

I think that slavery and what this country did to the Native Americans are terrible, but I also feel that this country wouldn't be what it is today without those things happening. People along with their country have to grow, and without doing so you don't learn.

You are horribly brain-washed. Just how was this nation built by blacks and native Americans when blacks were mostly involved in farming and "we slaughtered" all the natives? America would not only be where we are now WITHOUT any help of the ******* but we would be BETTER OFF than we are now. You just don't seem to get the fact that blacks cost America 850,000,000$ MORE than they pay in. Take the black out of America and you also take out 60% of all prisons and at least 50% of welfare offices.
Read more facts instead of propaganda. If farming 'builds country's' then Japan and Germany must have an awful lot of farmers. The facts are capitalists, engineers, inventors and the like is what builds nations not those who harvest watermelon.

I think USA would have been nothing but an ordinary country without the minorities and immigrants. That's the reason they want immigrants using Green Card programme, to help them be on the line, as most of the people who were born American and have 100% American blood are lazy and have sh***y lower jobs. The 3rd sector of the economy is ruled by Asian people, especially Indian, Pakistani and Arabic people.

i think that Africa would have had its people in slaved by some other peoples at some point around the same time as they were brought to the USA. they were a very primitive people who had very little in the way of defences. so they were prime targets for slavery or killing.
i do think that it would have been far better for the earth if no one had gone to Africa in the early days of discovery of continents. i think the people in Africa were so far behind in development evolution that we have disturbed there natural progression into the civilized world. they lacked any written language and math was just not there. most lived as primitive as cave men . in the 1970's tribes were found in the jungle that had not yet discovered fire.
i think they would have done better if they had been left to evolve for another half million years.
again i must say that if it were not the Americana's then it would have been someone else that would have taken the natives from Africa and used them as slaves. we do know they themselves used each other as slaves so the concept is not unique to the white man . there is a possibility that one tribe might have progressed faster then most others and then in slaved them in great numbers. i think no matter how it went down they would have ended up as slaves to some one someplace at some point.

I think that you really need to broaden your view. The Irish, Scottish and more were also slaves. It is not just the blacks that had that problem. I think that America would not be the country that she is now unless everything happened the way that it did. :)

This is to Duke--how freaking ignorant can one human being possibly be? First of all, we Native people DID and DO contribute great things to society. We just don't have to flaunt it--humility is more important to us than it is to the mainstream culture. Go back to Europe if you don't like the way America is now!
Also, we're hardly any sort of melting pot. Try a tossed salad, where people live in little neighborhoods according to ethnicity. That happens very often in most cities.

"Because this country was built off alot of blacks" I always see this statement posted on Answers that blacks built this country. Is that really what the schools are teaching nowadays? The truth is that the black slaves picked cotton down South. Please explain to me how picking a little cotton built this country.
