Oh man, how I feel for you. We have the hour fest talk sessions too, and about 9:30-10 am they decide to finally start to do something. It wouldn't be bad if they didn't talk like they had a megaphone to their mouths.

The women talking cannot be traced, your activity on your computer can. Besides, most conversations start with something work related and then a few minutes or so are spent talking about personal items, this is called building a work relationship (being concerned about the people you work with), playing games on a computer can no way be construed as any kind of work relationship.

If you keep it brief and don't let it interfere with your work you should be able to play on answers. I f her jabbering becomes a problem you should confidentially talk to the boss about it Though.

I don't see any reason why you can't but if I were you then I would get on with my work and do really well and then when it was time for promotion the rest of the slackers would be very sorry indeed. Set an example and show them you have pride in your work and are above their pettiness.

I loathe office politics!!! Water cooler mentality makes me sick. There's a guy at my husband's job who spends ALL his shift on the phone with his various girlfriends (he has 4 kids almost the same age, one with each) and then a few more girlfriends with whom he has no children. But if someone says anything to him, he says, "You're harassing me cuz I'm black! I'll file a human rights complaint!!!" The ************ pulls in 6 figures, some of it taxpayer money.
