I really feel for you as an ex sufferer of severe bouts of tonsillitis. How long it can last all depends on the age you started getting it and how long each bout lasts. If you are someone who suffers every now and again then with antibiotics from your GP you should be well on your way to recovering and should feel completely better by your birthday. If you are hoping that it will disappear by itself then you are really going to suffer. If you do suffer regularly or more than 6-7 times a year then do talk to your GP about having them removed.I had mine taken out at the age of 16 and and at 27 years old i have had only 2 sore throats since.GL!

Listerine he? Next thing you know will be icecream. But seriously: tonsillitis and the (very high) temperatures it may cause come in episodes lasting 3 to 6 days. The problem is not that we cannot treat it ( we have lots of antibiotics, from the antique sodium penicillin to the very modern 4th generation antibiotics) (and please let the patient have his medication EVEN IF THE FEVER HAS ABATED).The problem is the disease comes back sometimes very soon. (Recurrent tonsillitis). In these cases the tonsils, which are a natural filter against microbes have been transformed in a real breeding ground for the bugs. And so?? The problem is that each infection may have a very negative effect on your heart valves and cause in later years a nasty heart affection.
So in most cases of recurrent tonsillitis we recommend a tonsillectomy (cutting out the tonsils) and we prescribe lots of icecream!!!

When I have tonsilitis it will only go away if I take antibiotics as it is a bacterial infection. Get to the docs, they'll probably give you a weeks worth of tablets, it'll feel better afer a couple of days and you'll be fine by your birthday!

My sore throat started on around Wednesday. It slowly got worse as time ticked on and the throat, the tongue, under the tongue, in fact everywhere in the general area swelled up and hurt like crazy. What made things worse was the build up of saliva. The continual build up of saliva is the worst because swallowing is when it hurts the most. Lozenges hurt, because you have to swallow saliva and in most cases they are not strong enough anyway when it comes to acting as a local anesthetic. In other words the little relief you get is not worth the number of times you have to swallow in the process of trying to have them work. Unless the pain killers dissolve, the solid tablets are too difficult to swallow unless crushed and mixed with honey and warm water. Anyway Monday morning I could not talk and could hardly open my mouth. I could not phone to make an appointment, so I went to see my Doctor as soon as he opened at 7:30AM. He gave me an injection of antibodies, subscribed 5 days worth of the same in tablet form, took a swap test and now Wednesday the 25th of November the swelling has lowered to about 15% of discomfort. For a couple of days I could not eat nor drink. Now I can drink and eat warm soups. Hopefully that 15% should be gone in a day or two I am guessing.

I assume you're taking anti biotics prescribed by the doctor. You should start feeling better in another couple of days once the anti biotics kick in. Don't forget, drink plenty of fluids which will help to keep you hydrated and help to keep your temperature down. Get well soon.
