It could be Flannan Isle.
Excerpt from "Flannan Isle" by Wilfrid Wilson Gibson.
"Aye: though we hunted high and low,
And hunted everywhere,
Of the three men's fate we found no trace
Of any kind in any place,
But a door ajar, and an untouched meal,
And an overtoppled chair. "
In December, 1900, three lighthouse keepers mysteriously disappeared. (There's a Doctor Who story based on that, "The Horror of Fang Rock.")
My answer is based on the puzzle being potentially less whimsical than it may be.

If this is a crossword clue it would help to know the number of letters in the answer. (These two just before me have the right idea!)
