There is a liquid snake repellant that you might get and put around the top of the basement walls. I can't remember which garden catalog I saw it in but if you Google snake repellant you should be able to find it.

You will need to find the point of entry and block it. You may have a nest somewhere in the basement and it is one family of snakes.

spray sulfur on the basement floor. Sulfur will keep snake away.

buy a mongoose, not so much of a problem for us living in the uk, i had a wasps nest once though and resolved it by filling the nest entrance up with window sealant
