I have an external hard drive that i connect to my desktop pc. If i buy a macbook and also try to connect to that, will it reformat the hard drive so that i lose everything from my pc?

nope, it won't reformat unless it is corrupted for some reason.
It works just like the flash drive, you can plug it in anywhere and not fear any loss. :)

Most Macs should be able to read from the External Drive.
So it should not affect your PC especially if used interchangeably

no! the mac will just install the drivers to itself and it will be able to read it's contents! works same as a pen drive!!
