Last fall I replaced my AC compressor and accumulator and then had a shop recharge it. At the time I was worried that I didn't put enough oil in, but the mechanic said I'd be fine (I told him I put about 2 oz in) and that he'd add a little with the refrigerant. It worked great for a couple months, then the engine would buck, kick, and stall when I switched to AC or if the defroster kicked on the compressor. Last night I bought a 4 oz can of oil charge and had my wife sit in the cab and kick on the AC while I connected the oil charge can. It was dark outside, so I could see that after about 30 sec of running there were about 4 spots on the compressor (I believe the clutch part) that were red hot. My wife cut the engine and it was smoking pretty good.

Any ideas? Replace compressor/clutch? More/less oil?

It dies cause your putting a heavy load on the engine at the time you turn the ac on. So its obvious its the ac compressor. I would completely discharge the system and drain all the oil in it and start over. From scratch and see what happens.

Compressor Stalls

Usually belt squalls will go away with higher engine speeds. Yes, it could be the a/c but it would be the clutch assembly if it is. This will spin even if the a/c is turned off. It could be any of the components under the hood. You need to try and localize it if you can. But if I had to guess I would look and the idle tension pulley. This is what will keep your belts tight at all times. It will be spring loaded and look like it has no purpose but to let the belt roll over it. Take a can of WD-40 and use the little red tube that come with it and spray all of these spots one at a time so you will find which one is bad. Do not spray it on the belt until last so you can eliminate it also. WD-40 will eventually dry up and be gone off the belt.

It sounds like your clutch was slipping and what causes that is when you have too much oil and charge and the other is a bad compressor because it didn't have enough oil in it. Those little pistons inside need lube to keep pumping and where does that lube come from?? Exactly...from your oil charge. No oil, no lube whamo! A new compressor is blown up.

The first thing to do is check to see if the compressor will turn. With the engine off place your hand on the front side of the compressor, [directly in front of the pulley]
The plate should turn freely. If it does then remove the belt & check to see if the bearings in the pulley have failed causing the pulley to bind once engaged. If you are able to get close enough to it to smell the clutch, it shouldn't smell burnt.

Good Luck

If the earlier compressor failed and shed some contamination into the system, the filter may have plugged causing the new compressor to work much too hard, causing it to fail also.

Sounds like the compressor is toast. If you replaced it due to a failed compressor was the system flushed and evacuated before you filled it back up?

did you read the direction's.....no you didnt.....you may have f**k the compressor up.....it should hold about 8oz of oil in a new one unless it say's it is in it from factory, but check idle sensor it should speed up engine when a/c is turned on....some time it does not pay to do something yourself

theres a idle sensor by the throttle thats suppose to pick up the idle as soon as you turn on the ac.it could be bad.
